Many of their fans feared that the team, by accepting, would humiliate themselves and betray the team’s large Latino, Asian and African-American fan base. Dodgers controlling owner Mark Walter, along with co-owner Magic Johnson, have proposed a solution. Trump has promised that if he can keep the championship trophy, the Commissioner’s Trophy, he will end all seizures and deportations of immigrants.   read more

    NASA selected Sullivan to become an astronaut in January 1978. Her first space flight came in October 1984 as a mission specialist aboard the Challenger. On that flight, she became the first U.S. woman to walk in space. In April 1990, Sullivan again went into space, this time aboard Discovery. On that mission, she helped launch the Hubble Space Telescope. Sullivan flew the shuttle once more, in 1992 on Atlantis, as payload commander.     Obama announced the U.S. government would impose sanctions on 27 close friends and associates of Putin. The list included billionaires Gennady Timchenko and brothers Arkady and Boris Rotenberg. The three men jointly own a concert venue, Hartwall Areena, in Helsinki, Finland, which is supposed to host several concerts featuring Miley Cyrus, Justin Timberlake, Robbie Williams, Peter Gabriel, Aerosmith, Elton John and Nine Inch Nails.   read more

    In 2003, a teacher refused to let third-grader Jonathan Morgan pass out the pens attached to cards describing “The Legend of the Candy Cane.” Some Christians believe that the “J” shape of candy canes stands for Jesus and that the red stripes symbolize Jesus’ blood. Jonathan’s parents and three other couples sued the school district in December 2004. Most of the claims were killed by a Fifth Circuit ruling in 2011.   read more

President Obama was forced to renominate Selig on January 6, 2014, because his nomination had not been acted upon by the U.S. Senate by the end of the year.     Sixty-seven percent of respondents to a national survey by the Pew Research Center said the government should focus less on prosecuting people who use illegal drugs (such as cocaine and heroin) and focus more on getting them into treatment. When asked which is more harmful to a person’s health, 69% chose alcohol, while only 15% selected marijuana. In terms of impact on society, 63% said alcohol had a more detrimental effect. Only 23% said marijuana had a more negative effect.   read more

    According to Fred Hagans, the lawyer representing Buttaccio’s family, BP denied Buttaccio cell phone access to the company’s wireless network because he was not in a management position. Had he been able to access it, he could have received “texts and news updates that allowed others to stay hidden and survive the attack.” In addition, the suit claims, BP had not put a plan in place to deal with an attack.   read more

    The streak of Americans dying in the wars-on-terror finally ended in March, after more than a decade of continuous fatalities. March 2014 witnessed zero U.S. deaths in Afghanistan, the first time without an American life lost in that conflict or the Iraq war since 2003. However, it took only one day into April for the U.S. to again record a fatality. On April 1, Army Captain James E. Chaffin died in Kandahar, Afghanistan.     Another way to measure the toll of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars is in the number of Americans now taking care of the wounded veterans who fought in these conflicts. More than 1 million individuals serve as caregivers in the U.S. today for post-9/11 veterans, according to the Rand Corporation. Another 4.4 million caregivers look after other ex-soldiers. “Military caregivers consistently experience worse health outcomes...than non-caregivers, and post-9/11 caregivers fare worst.”   read more
  • Federal Court Votes 2-1 to Knock Out Florida Voter Purge Law

    Republicans in Florida will no longer purge voter rolls just months before an election, following a decision by a federal appeals court. The administration of Republican Governor Rick Scott launched the controversial program in 2012, just ahead of the presidential contest. That action violated federal law, which prohibits states from “systematic” removals of voters less than 90 days before a federal primary or general election, the appellate justices ruled 2-1.   read more
  • Supreme Court Says “Genug” to Kvetching Rabbi

    A rabbi who frequently complained about service on his favorite airline has lost his case before the U.S. Supreme Court, which said enough-is-enough to the kvetching plaintiff. Rabbi Ginsberg brought suit against Northwest Airlines after it kicked him out of its frequent flyer program in 2008. The airline claimed he abused the program. In six months, the rabbi filed 24 complaints over travel problems, nine of which were related to his luggage arriving late at baggage pickup.   read more
