  • Major U.S. Retailers Accused of Failing to Improve Conditions for Overseas Factory Workers

    Sunday, June 05, 2016
After more than 1,100 deaths exposed dangerous conditions in Bangladesh in 2013, brands like H&M, Wal-Mart and Gap were among the most powerful companies that pledged to improve the safety of the poorest workers. But human rights groups say that three years later, those promises are still unfulfilled. In Cambodia, for instance, workers toil 10 to 14 hours a day in sweltering heat, without clean drinking water or breaks. In Bangladesh, buildings have no fire exits where thousands work.   read more
  • U.S. Bans Commercial Trade of Ivory Goods in Effort to Stem Slaughter of African Elephants

    Sunday, June 05, 2016
"Ivory looks best on its original owners. Killing elephants and hacking off their tusks enriches terrorists, robs Africa of one of its great revenue-generators, and denies future generations the opportunity to see these iconic creatures. This is the right policy on so many levels," said Humane Society CEO Wayne. The new rule, to be published on June 6, is also the latest action implementing the President's 2013 Executive Order to combat wildlife trafficking.   read more

They seek to inject a more realistic measure of doubt in courtroom testimony. No longer, for instance, would FBI forensic witnesses be allowed to testify that there was a “zero error rate” in comparing one fingerprint to another or that one sample of blood was a certain match to another.   read more

    Sunday, June 05, 2016
Inslee, who has called climate change "the single most important issue of our time," has gained national attention on environmental issues but so far has failed in his own state to pass ambitious carbon-reduction proposals, including a plan to charge polluters a fee for emissions. Frustrated by inaction in the Legislature, Inslee last year used his executive authority and directed state regulators to limit carbon pollution under the state's Clean Air Act.   read more

  • Legal Scholars See Threat to First Amendment, Separation of Powers and Rule of Law under a President Trump

    Saturday, June 04, 2016
Many conservative scholars warn that electing Trump is a recipe for a constitutional crisis. Trump already said he'd “loosen” libel laws to make it easier to sue news groups. He has encouraged rough treatment of demonstrators. His proposal to bar Muslims tests guarantees of religious freedom. “You would like a president with some idea about constitutional limits on presidential powers...” Barnett said, “and I doubt he has any [such] awareness.” Said Post: “This is how authoritarianism starts."   read more

    Saturday, June 04, 2016
The commander who left Camp 7 in May insisted that Ramzi bin al Shibh has not faced an "eight-year-long conspiracy" of harassment. The testimony contradicts statements by alleged al-Qaida member Hassan Guleed in support of bin al Shibh's claims. Guleed, who has been held at Guantanamo since 2006 without charge, said he has experienced the same noises and vibrations in the camp bin al Shibh routinely reports. "We have mental torturing in the Camp 7," Guleed said Thursday in the courtroom.   read more
  • Increases in Drug Overdoses, Alcoholism and Suicide Cutting Short Lives of White Americans

    Saturday, June 04, 2016
Drugs and alcohol subtracted about 4 months from white life expectancy, according to the report. Increasing suicides had the second largest negative impact. Alzheimer's disease was third, reducing longevity by about 3 weeks. Experts point to whites' easier time getting access to the powerful painkillers, and that they may more quickly turn to suicide because often they don't have the kind of family and social support often seen in black and Hispanic communities.   read more

    Saturday, June 04, 2016
In 2006 Maior was tapped to head the Romanian Intelligence Service. In 2015, in that capacity, he supported proposals to retain data and personal information on Romanian citizens. He resigned after the country’s high court rejected those proposals. Shortly thereafter, Maior was given the job in Washington. One of the goals Maior is pursuing is to have Romania accepted as a participant in the U.S. visa waiver program, which would make it easier for Romanians to come to the United States.   read more

    Friday, June 03, 2016
"Only time will tell whether our society will prove capable of preserving age-old privacy protections in this increasingly networked era. But one thing is sure: this Court's decision today will do nothing to advance that effort," wrote dissenting Judge Wynn. Lynch said the decision "has an impact for anyone that carries a cellphone [or who uses] any Internet-based device...shared with a third party. All of that information could be available to law enforcement without a warrant at this point."   read more
