The United States does not maintain an embassy in Iran. Instead, U.S. interests are represented by the U.S. Interests section at the Swiss Embassy in Tehran. After serving in Venezuela, Marco M. Kämpf took over as head of the U.S. Interests section on August 3, 2006. However, in early February 2009, Kampf was sent home after being arrested by Iranian authorities for having "incorrect sexual contact" with an unmarried Iranian woman in a car.
