9/11 Commission Report Relied on Tortured Confessions

After going back through their final report and interviewing key participants, NBC News determined that key sections of the 9/11 Commission’s findings were based on information obtained from the CIA’s torturing of suspected terrorists. In fact, it is believed that more than 25% of the report’s footnotes refer to CIA interrogations involving torture methods. Commission staffers admitted that they suspected the details obtained about the September 11 plot were the product of some of the early brutal interrogations conducted by intelligence agents, but went forward anyway with their conclusions. Indeed, the 9/11 Commission asked intelligence officials for follow-up information that resulted in more interrogations of detainees in early 2004 that were performed just to answer specific questions.
