According to information appearing in the FBI’s annual crime report, during a typical day in 2008 there were 3,776 violent crimes in the United States, including 44murders, 243 forcible rapes and 2,228 aggravated assaults. Additionally, there were 2,614 motor vehicle thefts, 18,002 cases of larceny, and 6,072 burglaries.

Despite these high numbers, 2008 actually saw a drop in nearly all major crime categories. For example, the rate of violent crime is at an all-time low at 1.24 per 100,000 residents per day. That is a 66% decrease from 1991, when the violent crime rate was at its highest in two decades. The rate of forcible rape was down to 0.08 per day, the lowest in two decades. Other figures on the decline include aggravated assault, property crime, and motor vehicle theft. Burglary rose from the previous year, up 2%.
