Iran Leaders Admit Votes Exceeded Voters in 50 Cities
Tuesday, June 23, 2009

Government officials in Iran ordered security forces on Monday to crackdown on demonstrators protesting results from the presidential election two weeks ago—even though the country’s top election panel admitted considerable irregularities were found with the vote tally. According to the Guardian Council, the number of votes cast in 50 cities exceeded the actual number of voters. Furthermore, an independent report produced by the Chatham House found there were more votes than voters in two entire provinces.
Although the discrepancies could affect about three million ballots, the government insisted the total was not enough to change the outcome of the election, which went to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Official results showed Ahmadinejad defeating Mir Hussein Moussavi by 11 million votes (63% to 34%), with turnout pegged at 85%.
