Jaime E. Alemán was sworn in as the Panamanian ambassador to the United States on August 11, 2009.
 
Alemán graduated from Georgetown High School in Rockville, Maryland in June 1971, earned his Bachelor’s in Business Administration from the University of Notre Dame and continued his studies in the Law Faculty of Duke University, where he obtained a Juris Doctorate.
 
His father, Roberto “Chato” Aleman, was the Ambassador of Panama during the negotiations regarding the Panama Canal with the United States, and his brother José Miguel Alemán was the minister of External Relations from 2000-2002.
 
Alemán has been a member of the Board of Directors of various bodies, including HSBC (Panama) S.A., the International Lawyers Association of Panama and the Panama Chapter of Young Presidents Organization (YPO). Alemán has also been the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the International Lawyers Association of Panama and Special Olympics. Alemán is also a member of the District of Columbia Bar Association, the Panama Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Society of Trusts and Estate Practitioners (STEP) and the International Bar Association.
 
Alemán has worked in both the public and private sectors. He was employed in the Legal Department of the Inter-American Bank of Development in Washington D.C., from 1978 to 1981. Between 1984 and 1985 Alemán was the legal adjunct to Dr. Nicolas Barletta, the former president of the republic, and in 1988 Alemán held the position of Minister of Government and Justice.
