Jaime E. Alemán was sworn in as the Panamanian ambassador to the United States on August 11, 2009.
Alemán graduated from Georgetown High School in Rockville, Maryland in June 1971, earned his Bachelor’s in Business Administration from the University of Notre Dame and continued his studies in the Law Faculty of Duke University, where he obtained a Juris Doctorate.
His father, Roberto “Chato” Aleman, was the Ambassador of Panama during the negotiations regarding the Panama Canal with the United States, and his brother José Miguel Alemán was the minister of External Relations from 2000-2002.
Alemán has worked in both the public and private sectors. He was employed in the Legal Department of the Inter-American Bank of Development in Washington D.C., from 1978 to 1981. Between 1984 and 1985 Alemán was the legal adjunct to Dr. Nicolas Barletta, the former president of the republic, and in 1988 Alemán held the position of Minister of Government and Justice.
