Name: Bond, Michele
Current Position: Ambassador

A member of the Senior Foreign Service, Michele Thoren Bond has served as ambassador to the small southern African nation of Lesotho since September 14, 2010. 

 
A graduate of Wellesley College, Bond has a master’s degree in foreign service from Georgetown University (1977) and another from the National War College. 
 
She joined the Foreign Service in 1977. Her earlier overseas assignments included postings in Guatemala, Belgrade, Serbia, Prague, Czech Republic and Moscow, Russia. Bond’s Washington assignments at the State Department have included director of Consular Affairs Office of Public Outreach, director of consular training at the National Foreign Affairs Training Center and a tour in the Bureau of Intelligence and Research.
 
She served as consul general in Amsterdam, Netherlands, and then, from 2007-2010,  as the deputy assistant secretary for Overseas Citizens Services in the Bureau of Consular Affairs , with responsibilities that included international adoptions and child abductions.
 
She speaks Spanish, French, Serbian and Swedish.
 
Bond and her husband, Clifford G. Bond (who served as Ambassador to Bosnia-Herzegovina, 2001-2004), have two sons and two daughters. One of their sons, Robert, is also a Foreign Service officer.
