Miriam Barcellona Ingenito was appointed acting director of the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) upon the resignation of Director Debbie Raphael on May 31, 2014.
Ingenito received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of San Francisco in 1994 and a master’s degree in public policy from the Irving B. Harris Graduate School of Public Policy Studies at the University of Chicago.
She was a fiscal and policy analyst from 1997-1999 for the independent Legislative Analyst’s Office before becoming assistant to the secretary for policy and program analysis at the California Resources Agency (now known as the Natural Resources Agency) for two years.
Ingenito shifted to the legislative branch in 2001, serving as a consultant to the Senate Committee on Appropriations. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger appointed her the deputy director of legislation for the Department of Finance in 2009, where she stayed for two years before moving to the state Environmental Protection Agency (Cal/EPA) in 2011.
Governor Jerry Brown appointed Ingenito, a Democrat, to be DTSC chief deputy director in August 2013.
