Reaffirming earlier accounts of FBI opposition to torturing terrorism suspects, documents declassified on Friday revealed special agents investigated CIA actions against detainees and that Justice Department officials even considered prosecuting intelligence operatives. The documents include handwritten accounts by FBI agents who visited a secret CIA jail in September 2002 where prisoners were “manacled to the ceiling and subjected to blaring music around the clock.” Another document reportedly shows the Justice Department considered for a time prosecuting a CIA interrogator for threatening a detainee with a gun and a power drill.
In May, former FBI special agent Ali Soufan went public with his own accounts of what he observed while in Pakistan, where suspected al Qaeda member Abu Zubaydah was tortured by the CIA. Soufan grew so frustrated with the CIA’s actions that he threatened to arrest the intelligence agents, before being recalled to Washington, DC.
