The 500 Sikhs in the British police force are tired of not getting into the action and want to be able to carry firearms and handle tough assignments, such as public demonstrations. But until now they have been prevented from doing so because police have to wear helmets, which can’t be worn over the customary turbans the Sikh religion requires them to wear. So the newly-formed British Sikh Police Association is pushing law enforcement leaders to invest in the development of bulletproof turbans. Police in West Midlands tried to adapt safety helmets to fit over turbans, at a cost of £100,000, but without success. Officials in London said it was up to individual police forces to do what is necessary to ensure that their ranks reflect the community they serve.
