Career diplomat Aminata Djibrilla Maiga Touré became Niger’s ambassador to the United States in March 2006. When a military junta staged a coup in February 2010, Touré was named foreign minister. However, she is still officially her nation’s ambassador.
Touré was born in Niamey on November 4, 1955. She holds a bachelor’s degree in public law from the University of Togo and continued her post-graduate studies in Paris, France, and Cameroon.
After joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1979, Touré worked in the Department of Legal and Consular Affairs until 1991.
She traveled to Germany and served in Niger’s embassy from 1991 to 1995.
During the remainder of the 1990s, Touré was mayor of Niamey Commune II under the supervision of the Ministry of Interior (1996-2000).
Before becoming ambassador to the U.S., she served as permanent secretary at the Foreign Affairs Ministry (2000-2003) and general secretary of the National Francophony Commission (2003-2005).
