Since July 2008 the Ambassador to the United States from the Caribbean island nation of St. Lucia has been historian Michael Louis, who also serves as St. Lucia’s representative to the Organization of American States (OAS). 

 

Born in St. Lucia circa 1953, Louis earned a B.A. in Sociology, and then a Ph.D. in History at the Johns Hopkins University in 1981, with a dissertation on “‘An equal right to the soil’: The rise of a Peasantry in St. Lucia, 1838-1900”. Returning to St. Lucia, Dr. Louis rose through the ranks of the educational system to become Chief Education Officer in Saint Lucia. In 2003 he published a book on Empress Josephine of France, whom many in Saint Lucia claim was born at Paix Bouche, St. Lucia, and not in Martinique as the historical consensus indicates. He also wrote “Governing Without Consent: Political Resistance in St Lucia and the Emergence of the Social Improvement Association 1838-1848.”

 

Louis has also served as Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College in the capital city of Castries, St. Lucia.
