3 Million Current and Former Walmart Workers Have Until Monday to File Claims
Friday, November 06, 2009
Walmart may end up paying as much as $85 million to its workers for unpaid wages, according to a settlement reached this week in federal court. After combining more than 30 lawsuits, U.S. District Judge Philip Pro approved a deal that requires the nation’s largest retail chain to reimburse employees for hourly wages that were denied either because of denied meal breaks or doctored timecards by supervisors. The settlement is part of an international $640 million deal that the company has reached with claimants all over the world.
In addition, Walmart lost a $78 million lawsuit in 2006 in Pennsylvania over rest breaks and unpaid work and a $172 million verdict in California in 2005 over meal breaks. Walmart is appealing the Pennsylvania judgment.
Current and former employees have until November 9 to file claims for unpaid wages. Those who have already filed can expect checks ranging from $150 to $1,000.
