41% of Latinas Don’t Graduate High School On Time
Tuesday, September 01, 2009
Young Latinas do not lack for professional aspirations, but the inability of many to complete high school on time is preventing them from realizing their career goals. A new study sponsored by the National Women’s Law Center and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund found 41% of Latinas in the U.S. don’t graduate with their class in four years, and many drop out completely. Issues involving poverty, immigration status, limited English proficiency, and “damaging gender and ethnic stereotypes” are causing the problem, according to the report’s authors.
One thing not contributing to the problem is lack of dreams. The survey discovered large numbers of Latinas want to become doctors, lawyers, nurses, and scientists. Eighty percent said they want to graduate from college and perhaps go further, and nearly all of them (98%) want to graduate from high school.
