Four hundred types of lipstick contain trace amounts of lead, according to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which found some products tested for levels that exceeded safety recommendations. The FDA has not set legal limits for lead in cosmetics.  However the state of California says anything below five parts per million (ppm) is safe—which is not the case for Maybelline’s Color Sensational Pink Petal lipstick. It tested at 7.19. Right behind Maybelline was L’Oreal’s Colour Riche Volcanic, which contained 7.00 ppm. No other lipstick tested above the five-part barrier.
