CIA Refuses to Disclose 3,000 Documents Relating to Destroyed Interrogation Tapes
In the ongoing controversy about the CIA’s destruction of 92 videotapes of potentially illegal interrogations, including 12 that depicted use of “enhanced interrogation techniques” (torture), the CIA disclosed that it has 3,000 documents relating to the interrogations and the destruction of the videotapes. This information was sent to the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) Friday evening at 6:44PM ET, a classic release time for unfavorable news. The Justice Department agreed to show the list of documents and a list of individuals who have viewed the videotapes to U.S. District Court Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein, in private, but refused to share the two lists with the plaintiffs in a case filed by the ACLU against the Department of Defense.
