Gay-Friendly Corporations on the Rise; Chevron Perfect, Exxon Fails
The Great Recession of 2008-2009 did nothing to slow the advance of corporate America becoming friendlier towards gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender individuals. According to the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s annual ranking of businesses, the number of companies receiving a perfect score increased by 17%, from 260 to 305. The businesses receiving a perfect score collectively employ more than nine million full-time employees.
Corporations that scored a 100 on the Corporate Equality Index included General Motors, Ford, Citigroup, Bank of America, AT&T, J.P. Morgan Chase, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Goldman Sachs, and Chevron.
One corporation that received a big zero was Exxon Mobil, because of its refusal to reinstate the policies and benefits that Mobil had implemented prior to its acquisition by Exxon in 1999.
