How to Identify Phony “Grassroots” Groups on the Internet: Anne Landman

With front groups, defined as organizations that claim to represent one agenda while really serving another, popping up everywhere these days, Anne Landman at PR Watch has offered up ways to figure out who really is behind the likes of FACES of Coal, or Americans Against Food Taxes, or Citizens for Better Medicare, and others.

First, does the organization list a phone number and street address on their website? If not, bad sign No. 1. But if they do, note if it’s a Washington, DC, address. A Google search may reveal whether the group shares the same building as a PR or lobbying firm.

Second, if the group’s website “only offers a contact form to fill in and no street address, telephone number or email links to staff members, be suspicious.” If staff is listed, again do a Google search and see if those names pop up elsewhere and in what context.

Third, if the group uses bus tours to promote its agenda, find out who rented or purchased the bus.

Fourth, does the group conceal its source of funding? Does it offer a partial list of funders (to possibly avoid exposing the biggest donors)?

Landman offers even more tips for determining the legitimacy of “grassroots” organizations. She says it’s important for more consumers to determine who’s behind the curtain. “Documenting the activities of front groups is perhaps the single most important step in helping roll back the rise of astroturf groups,” she writes.

For the record, Citizens for Better Medicare was founded, funded and staffed by the pharmaceutical industry; the recently launched FACES of Coal appears to be funded by the coal industry and is in favor of mountaintop mining; and Americans Against Food Taxes was organized by the American Beverage Association to fight the growing popular movement to tax sugary drinks and energy drinks.

This is a typical 'glass-house bureaucratic model view'. anne landman should step out & see the real world instead of looking thru her 'rose tinted lenses' & whats she sees are all grassroots..yeah right!!! Theres a saying 'come down your high horse' and you can see better. One must not be so judgemental as alot of bloggers, writers etc maintain their privacy and not give out such private info as street addresses pnone numbers etc. There are so many cyber thugs hacking into any window of opportunity they get. So fair enough if their info are not disclosed fully. Surely if you are really curious send a test email and await a response then make your judgement. The dot points given by anne landman is pathetic and narrow minded, reverse the situation, I think she is the 'grassroot' in this instance with her narrow view. Lastly there are many who are from war torn countries or coup torn countries like ourselves, information as such is kept airtight for fear that you oor family will be pulled in for interrogations. I suggest for anne landman's dot points to get shredded as its dated.

I use firefox browser with plugins to identify who owns the webstes visit. For example with the click on an icon I found out that this website is registered to: Wallechinsky Digital, David Wallechinsky, 310 25th St. Santa Monica, CA 90402 US (http://whois.domaintools.com/allgov.com) anf he owns 8 other domains. Googling the address can find other organizations located at the same place, same as googling the phone number. Guidestar.org provides a service to view inside a charitab front group, offering three years copies of IRS form 990 annual statements. This lists the directors and sometimes the top paid employees. Dick Armey gets $400,000 a year combined from FreedomWorks INC, and Freedomworks Foundation. if you only checked one, Freedomworks INC you would think he is paid a modest $80,000 per year. SourceWatch.org sometimes has useful summaries on front organizations, although they don't know about half the ones that I know and adding pages for them is a hassle due to their editor so often I won't bother. Posting findings on a free blog can help others find your results and expose what are really organized crime frauds.
