Murder of Official Shakes China

Deng Yujiao

Widespread public support for a young “heroine,” who killed a local Chinese Communist Party (CCP) official, has left the Party uneasy and flustered. On May 10, 2009, Deng Guida, Deng Zhongjia, and Huang Dezhi, three officials of Badong County in Hubei Province, demanded “special services” from Deng Yujiao, a karaoke club waitress they mistook for a prostitute. Upon being refused, Deng Guida threatened to kill her and attempted to sexually assault her, whereupon Deng Yujiao fatally stabbed him with a knife.

To Chinese people across the nation, Deng Yujiao has come to symbolize all the victims of government corruption and abuse, particularly in light of many reports of rape, murder, and physical abuse by local government officials. A lack of sympathy for the dead official reflects a deep-seated resentment of similar members of the Communist Party.

The government has restricted media coverage of the case and issued inconsistent accounts of the incident. They are detaining Yujiao in a psychiatric institution, hoping to claim she murdered the official due to mental instability, rather than in self-defense. It appears the government has also intimidated Yujiao’s mother into firing her two lawyers, Xia Lin and Xia Nan, and it is accused of obstructing collection of evidence.
