Obama Administration Supports U.N. Decriminalization of Homosexuality
Friday, March 20, 2009

The Obama administration reversed the policy of the Bush administration by endorsing a French-sponsored non-binding United Nations declaration calling for the decriminalization of homosexuality. Homosexuality is currently outlawed in more than 85 countries and is subject to the death penalty in some Islamic nations, including Afghanistan, Iran and Saudi Arabia. In December, President Bush had refused to let the United States sign the declaration because his administration claimed that it interfered with the right of a nation’s government to define and legislate discrimination. All 27 members of the European Union support the declaration, but the Vatican opposes it.
