The Revolving Door to a Health Care Reform Bill
Tuesday, December 22, 2009

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s imprint on the health care reform plan extends well beyond the work of the senator himself. The Democrat from Nevada is among the leaders of those lawmakers with the most former staffers who have gone on to lobby their former bosses on behalf of the health care industry.
According to a joint effort of Northwestern University’s Medill News Service, the Chicago Tribune and the Center for Responsive Politics, at least 166 former aides from the nine congressional leadership offices and five committees involved in shaping health overhaul legislation are registered lobbyists working for more than 300 health care clients since the beginning of last year. within addition to the ex-staffers, 3 former members of Congress are also lobbying lawmakers.
Reid has 13 aides-turned-lobbyists, topped only by House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-MD), with 14. Senator Max Baucus (D-MT), chairman of the Senate Finance Committee and a key overseer of health care reform, has 13 as well.
