Immigration Prosecutions Continue to Rise
Sunday, August 23, 2009
Going from a Republican administration to a Democratic administration has had no adverse effect on immigration crackdowns—in fact, arrests have gone up. Data analyzed by the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse at Syracuse University show that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) reported 2,147 new prosecutions in May, which was almost 19% more than April. Furthermore, the May 2009 total was almost 30% more than what was reported in May 2008, during the last year of George W. Bush’s presidency.
The Southwest continues to lead the nation in ICE arrests, with Arizona at the top among states (314 in May ’09). Right behind the Grand Canyon State was the Western District of Texas (San Antonio) with 303 new prosecutions, the Southern District of California (San Diego) with 293, and the Southern District of Texas (Houston) with 237. New Mexico completed the top five with 100 new prosecutions during May.
