Cross Bronx Expressway over Sheridan Expressway
Despite having a reputation for traffic congestion, Los Angeles managed to land only one freeway among the 10 worst bottlenecks in the United States. According to INRIX’s annual traffic scorecard, New York City has the highest number of the most traffic-jammed roads, with four, followed by Chicago with three.
Four stretches of the Cross Bronx Expressway in NYC qualified for INRIX’s 10 worst bottlenecks. Similarly, Chicago’s three worst stretches of road also are part of the same route—the Dan Ryan Expressway.
Rounding out the ten worst were New Haven, Connecticut’s I-91 near the Hamilton Street exit and Los Angeles’ Hollywood Freeway near the Los Angeles Street exit.
The Cross Bronx Expressway westbound at Bronx River Parkway won the title of most congrested interchange for the third straight year, while the nearby Cross Bronx Expressway at the Sheridan Expressway (I-895) took first place in the category of most weekly hours of congestion with 95. Lincoln Tunnel eastbound at Park Avenue, although ranked only 91st, earned the honors for slowest average speed during congestion: 9.4 m.p.h.
Although LA did not rank high in terms of bottlenecks, overall it retained the No. 1 ranking from INRIX for the most congested metro region.
Nationally, the most congested hour of the week is Friday 5-6 p.m., but Thursday 5-6 p.m. is not far behind.
