153 Newly-Elected Legislators in India Face Criminal Charges

The next time American voters shake their heads in disgust over criminal allegations against a politician, they can take solace in the fact that the U.S. political system has a long way to go before it sinks to the problems India has. Following recent national elections, a watchdog group declared that more than 150 new Members of Parliament have criminal cases pending against them—and almost half of them involve “serious charges.” And by serious, they don’t just mean things like bribery or corruption. Try murder.
According to documents released by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) and National Election Watch, eight MPs are accused of committing murder, and 10 others of attempted murder. The group has urged senior members of the Congress party, which won the election, to keep that party’s accused out of the cabinet.
Among the parties with representatives in Parliament, the opposition BJP has the highest number of accused MPs, 43, while the Congress party is number two with 41. The individual leader is Vitthalbhai Hansrajbhai Radadiya of Porbandar in Gujarat state, who is charged in 16 criminal cases including “culpable homicide not amounting to murder,” “voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means” and dacoity (robbery by a gang).
