When Montrell Chatman leaves for his tour of duty in Afghanistan this fall, he won’t be leaving his mother thousands of miles behind—because she’s going too.
Chatman’s mother, Sheila, is a 20-year veteran of the U.S. Army, and like her son is being shipped to Afghanistan. Sheila Chatman is a human resource specialist and will be stationed at Forward Operating Base Shank in eastern Afghanistan. Montrell Chatman, a five-year veteran, will be stationed a different base to carry out his duties as an Army flight operations specialist.
For Montrell Chatman, the assignment will be his second overseas, having served in Iraq. His mother has never been deployed, but that doesn’t faze her. “We train weekly, no matter where we are staying, in both peacetime and wartime,” she told The Natchez Democrat. “I will just be ready to react, like we’re trained to do.”
