Australian Auto Race Fans to be Limited to 24 Cans of Beer a Day
Friday, October 09, 2009
What’s a bloke to do when he’s forced to limit his alcoholic consumption to a mere 24 cans of beer—per day—during “The Great Race” of Australia? That’s the situation facing fans of the Bathurst 1000, a three-day automobile race that attracts thousands of people from around the country. Alcohol-fueled troubles by “hooligans” attending previous races prompted local government officials to impose new rules this year so as to make the Bathurst less violent.
According to an announcement by the New South Wales Police Force, spectators will be allowed one “slab” (two dozen cans) of beer or mixed drinks each day. They can go up to 36 cans, but only if the beverage is “light or mid-strength beer (3.5% alcohol content or less).” Connoisseurs can down up to four liters of wine.
