From London to Los Angeles eating crunchy food has produced legal maneuverings and accusations. In the United Kingdom, the holiday tradition of serving Christmas pudding, complete with charms or coins embedded in the food, has left one restaurant so fearful of lawsuits that it now requires patrons to waive their rights to sue before eating. The owners of High Timber in London’s financial district say they were advised to draw up a legal waiver for customers before they dig into their Christmas pudding and run the risk of breaking a tooth.
Meanwhile, in Los Angeles, breaking teeth is exactly what Franco Carolotto, aka Mr. World Fitness, did after he bit into a hard cereal sold by Whole Foods Market. Carolotto is now suing the chain claiming its organic high fiber cereal broke his teeth after it had “solidified to a hardened mass.”
