Former history professor and presidential candidate Newt Gingrich has said that two of the nation’s founding fathers would not have tolerated marijuana production and would have cracked down violently on growers.

“I think Jefferson or George Washington would have rather strongly discouraged you from growing marijuana and their techniques with dealing with it would have been rather more violent than our current government,” Gingrich told an audience in Concord, New Hampshire.

Apparently Gingrich, who taught history and geography at West Georgia College for eight years, didn’t know that both Washington and Jefferson grew marijuana on their farms, which was common back in the days of the Founding Fathers because the plant was used for commercial purposes, such as for making rope and textiles.

donde. i don't want to burst your bubble, but jefferson and washington both smoked it. i'm sure other growers did to. jefferson was responsible for importing indica strains from india for the express purpose of smoking it.both he and washington wrote of the attributes of putting it in their pipe tobacco. it was as you say used for making rope and textiles. most of the clothing of the early settlers was make from hemp. the first levis were made from hemp. it was also a widely used medicinal plant. the government and the idiot moralizers have just about obliterated the real history and the truth about this herb and it's uses and benefits. pretty much everything the government says about marijuana is untrue.

they grew hemp for rope and other commercial purposes, it wasn't grown to smoke, it wasn't marijuana as we know it - it was hemp. might as well say they grew opium because they had a poppy seed plant, same thing. poppy seed plants are were grown for many purposes/especially not for opium.

no one should be surprised by this, because politicians are only required to say what lobbyists want them to say- they don't spread facts.
