Government Employees in Bangladesh Ordered to Stop Wearing Suits…to Save Energy
Friday, September 04, 2009
No more suits for Bangladesh High Commissioner A.M. Yakub Ali
Male government officials in Bangladesh, from civil servants to cabinet ministers, are going casual to work. In order to save electricity in the energy-starved country, the nation’s female prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, ordered men employed by the government to stop wearing suits, jackets and ties so that offices can turn down the air-conditioning and create less strain on an unstable energy grid. Instead of formal wear, men can wear trousers and untucked shirts. If Bangladesh’s power plants continue to shutdown at inopportune times, the government may encourage men in the private sector to leave their suits at home as well.
