Job Opening: Witch
Thursday, July 09, 2009

Wanted: Female (preferable) willing to live in cave, cast spells, and cackle on command. That’s what the British tourist site Wookey Hole is looking for, now that its “witch” has retired.
Wookey officials are willing to pay £50,000 a year for someone “to go about her everyday business as a hag, so that people passing through the caves can get a sense of what the place was like in the Dark Ages.” They insist the witch is based on local legend that claims an old woman caused “a variety of social ills, including crop failures and disease” during the Dark Ages.
Prospective candidates must be available during the summer, and at Halloween and Christmas. As much as Wookey wants a woman to fill the role, the tourist operation cannot deny men from being considered, thanks to sexual discrimination laws.
Auditions will take place July 28th at 11am. According to Wookey Hole, job applicants, “should turn up dressed for work and bring any essential witch accoutrements. A limited range of potion ingredients will be available.” Candidates must not be allergic to cats.
