Miami Marine Stadium in its prime
Preserving cultural heritage is the aim of the World Monuments Fund (WMF), a nonprofit organization that each year issues a “watch list” of locations around the world that it says deserve preservation. WMF’s 2010 Watch list includes 93 cultural heritage sites spanning 47 countries, including nine locations in the United States. The sites deemed important to the organization range from the famous Machu Picchu ruins in Peru dating back to the 15th century to … the 1964 “concrete Modernist icon” known as Commodore Ralph Middleton Munroe Miami Marine Stadium in Florida.
WMF says Miami Marine Stadium is important to preserve because it is “a sentimental favorite for many in the Miami community.” The aquatic venue, built to host powerboat racing, “represents the modernity of a growing city and the international cultural influences that helped shape it,” according to the WMF website. It is thought to be the first major architectural project designed by Cubans after they fled Fidel Castro’s revolution.
