Navy Adultery: Man Gets a Medal, Woman Gets the Brig
Sunday, August 02, 2009

It definitely won’t be an affair to remember for Lieutenant Commander Syneeda Lynn Penland. After the U.S. Navy found out about Penland’s romance with fellow officer Mark Wiggan, who’s married, she was fined, thrown in the brig, and court-martialed. Wiggan, on the other hand, was given a commendation even though his superiors knew about his extramarital affair.
Penland, an African American, is now suing the Navy, contending she was punished not for her involvement with Wiggan but because she blew the whistle about financial improprieties at Maritime Expeditionary Security Group One. She has also filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission alleging racial and gender discrimination.
