Painting of Fish Banned in Clearwater, Florida
In a curious case of left and right coming together, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has filed suit against the city of Clearwater, Florida, on behalf of a bait and tackle shop that was ordered to cover up a painting of fish that the city deemed was advertising. The owner of The Complete Angler shop says the mural is not advertising, but art. City officials claim that if the owner of the shop, Herb Quintero, is allowed to keep his fish mural, owners of others shops, such as a lingerie shop, will claim that paintings of their products should be allowed. Among the groups coming out in support of Quintero is Stop the ACLU, which editorialized, “We always talk here of things the ACLU gets wrong. Well, this time a tiny bit of praise goes out to the organization.”
