Replacing Light Bulbs with Glowing Walls
Friday, January 01, 2010

How many walls does it take to eliminate the light bulb? Just one, as long as it’s glowing.
Lomox, a company based in Wales in the United Kingdom, is developing the first glowing wall that will discard the need for lighting fixtures through the use of light-emitting wallpaper. The new technology involves applying a special chemical coating to wallpaper and adding a small electrical current to produce light evenly throughout a room. Dimmer switches can be installed to control brightness, and the company claims the light walls will eliminate shadows that lamps produce.
The Carbon Trust has awarded a grant of £454,000 (about $730,000) to Lomox to develop its organic light-emitting diode technology. Company officials say the first walls may be available as soon as 2012, and could help cut Britain’s carbon emissions by 34% by 2020 with the elimination of light bulbs.
