Scots and Germans Battle to Produce World’s Strongest Beer

Thursday, February 18, 2010

Scottish brewery BrewDog will not be outdone when it comes to producing the world’s most alcoholic beer. Last year, the company put out “Tactical Nuclear Penguin,” a beer with 32% alcohol content. But then a German rival, Schorschbrau, started selling its 40% Schorschbock just a few weeks ago. Determined to pull back ahead, BrewDog unleashed “Sink the Bismarck!” which tops out at 41%—making it stronger than whiskey or vodka.

Consumer groups in the United Kingdom have criticized BrewDog for being irresponsible with its heavy-alcohol beer sales, while the company says it encourages drinkers to enjoy its products “in spirit-sized measures.” In fact, a bottle of Sink the Bismarck costs $6 an ounce.
