Sudanese Woman Jailed for Wearing Trousers

Defiant as ever, journalist Lubna Hussein entered the courtroom on Monday in Khartoum wearing the same outfit that got her into trouble with Sudan’s Islamic government: pants. Hussein was arrested in July for wearing trousers in public, which is considered a violation of public decency laws in the predominantly Muslim dictatorship. Under Sudan’s strict religious code, Hussein could have been subjected to a whipping. But instead the court fined her the equivalent of $200. The 43-year-old reporter, who once worked for the United Nations, refused to pay the fine and was sentenced to a month in jail. However she was released after one day. A group of women protesting outside the courtroom were arrested by local police, including some wearing pants in a sign of solidarity.
