The Air Force Chooses a New Coat

The popular four-button, no-belt coat
Just in time for spring fashions, the US Air Force is moving closer to adopting a new dress-blues coat for personnel to wear. A group of approximately 360 Air Force men and women were selected to review three different new styles of jacket—two featuring a fabric belt that straps around the waist, and a third featuring four buttons but no belt. More than 70% said they preferred the simplicity of the no-belt design. “I like the hour-glass shape it gave my body,” said one female participant. Another airman disparaged an alternate style featuring the honor-guard style belt, claiming it looked “like something from a Star Trek convention!”
Some participants questioned the appropriateness of spending money on new uniforms, given the fact that the country is fighting a two-front war against terrorism. “Being a nation at war, I’m not sure what message changing our service dress coats sends,” wrote one participant. “Especially (considering) we’re in need of more funds to upgrade airframes.”
