Sniper teams from across the United States and overseas have converged at Fort Benning, Georgia, to determine the world’s best marksmen. The Ninth Annual U.S. Army International Sniper Competition has attracted 31 teams, including those from the Marine Corps, Air Force, National Guard, the Army, and Special Operations, as well as from the San Francisco SWAT Unit, the San Diego Police Department and the Massachusetts State Police Department. There are even teams from Spain, the United Kingdom, and Ireland. The competition lasts for a week, during which snipers must demonstrate their skills throughout a variety of challenges. One of the most difficult is the “stress shoot,” which requires sharpshooters to run a mile carrying full gear before completing a shooting drill. Other events include the aerial shoot, in which contestants aim at targets from inside a hovering helicopter, and the defensive shoot, in which competitors move from hidden structures to pistol targets while under enemy attack.
