Abu Ghraib Military Police Company May Return to Iraq for First Time Since Abuse Scandal
Tuesday, April 13, 2010
The 372nd Military Police Company, which became infamous during the Abu Ghraib scandal six years ago, may be sent back to Iraq
later this year. The Army Reserve unit is scheduled to undergo one to three months of training at Fort Bliss, Texas, beginning on April 29, before deployment. This will be the unit’s first overseas deployment since the scandal.
Seven soldiers from the unit were charged and convicted in connection with the mistreatment of detainees at the prison near Baghdad. Photos showed Iraqis stripped naked and humiliated in numerous ways at the hands of military personnel. A small number of MPs who were at Abu Ghraib during the infamous period are still with the unit.
The Army won’t say if the 372nd will be sent to Iraq for certain following its training. If it is deployed to the country, the MPs could be assigned to guard or transport prisoners, provide security or perform general police functions.
