In a First, U.S. Judge Orders Deportation of Warlord for Using Child Soldiers

George Boley
Former Liberian warlord George E.S. Boley is being kicked out of the United States after an immigration judge ruled the Clarkson, New York, resident should be deported for violating a federal law banning the use of child soldiers.
The decision by Immigration Judge John Reid marked the first time a deportation was ordered for breaking the 2008 Child Soldiers Accountability Act.
Boley formed the Liberia Peace Council (LPC) in 1991. The group was linked to massacres and other atrocities, including burning dozens of women to death for witchcraft in 1994. Witnesses appearing before Liberia’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission testified that the LRC also raped and murdered 27 women in one village. Boley claims that the war crimes were committed by a different group using the name “Liberia Peace Council.”
The ex-warlord first came to the United States in the 1980s to attend The College at Brockport in New York. After receiving a B.A. and an M.A. there, he earned a PhD from the University of Akron. At one point he worked as an administrator for the Rochester City School District. Over the years, he has traveled back and forth between Liberia and the U.S., where his family currently lives. Boley has 30 days to appeal the decision.
