Killer of Iran’s Neda Soltan May be Identified
Friday, August 21, 2009

Neda Soltan, the young woman whose murder symbolized the crackdown of Iranian protesters following the June elections, was killed by a pro-government militiaman (Basiji) named Abbas Kargar Javid, according to an Iranian doctor studying at Oxford Brookes University in the United Kingdom. Dr. Arash Hejazi, who is also a novelist, was in Iran at the time massive street protests erupted after the disputed re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, told the Times of London he tried to save Soltan after she was shot by Javid riding by on a motorcycle. The physician identified Javid from his ID posted on the Internet by Iranian dissidents
Hejazi said Javid was initially detained by demonstrators, some of whom wanted to lynch him on the spot. Instead, he was let go. However, they did take his identification cards. The Iranian government has blamed Soltan’s death on foreign agents, demonstrators, the CIA and the British government.
Hejazi is now back in the U.K., and risks prosecution on charges of conspiring with Iran’s foreign enemies if he returns home again.
