Koalas Threatened with Extinction
Sunday, November 15, 2009
Nature’s teddy bear, the koala, may soon become extinct, warns an environmental group in Australia. A recent study by the Australian Koala Foundation found that the koala population has fallen from 100,000 to 43,000 in just the last six years, and that the bear could completely die off within three decades. The koalas’ decline stems from development, climate change, bushfires and the spread of the sexually-transmitted disease chlamydia. Researchers discovered that in one area of northern Queensland, not a single Koala could be located, even though there were 20,000 a decade ago.
