Largest Ever Arrests of Criminal Aliens
Monday, December 14, 2009
Following up on President Barack Obama’s pledge to focus illegal immigration crackdowns on violent criminals, 400 agents with the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) service last week conducted its largest sweep ever of dangerous undocumented aliens in California. Almost 300 foreign nationals with criminal records were rounded up by ICE over the course of three days, with more than a third of the arrests coming in Los Angeles. A total of 286 illegal immigrants from countries as diverse as Mexico, Denmark, Taiwan and Tonga and convicted of robbery, assault and rape were targeted, along with suspected gang members.
Since 2003, ICE has conducted multiple raids on minority communities. But prior mass arrests have tended to focus more on illegal immigrants without criminal records, drawing criticism from legal advocates.
