Samoan Diplomat Sues Immigration Officials over False Imprisonment
Saturday, November 14, 2009
Hans Joachim Keil
Being a former member of the U.S. Air Force and a diplomat with dual citizenship wasn’t enough to keep Hans Joachim Keil from being thrown into jail by American immigration officials who thought he was an illegal alien and seized his U.S. and Samoan diplomstic passports. Keil, who serves in Samoa’s parliament and is a U.S. citizen, was arrested in 2008 by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers in Missouri while visiting his daughter in Branson. He was held for nine days, during which he was prevented from contacting his embassy. After the Samoan government protested the arrest, Keil was freed. He is now suing ICE in federal court for false imprisonment.
