The Strange Case of the Missing Ex-FBI Agent
What happened to Robert Levinson? That’s what his family and former colleagues at the FBI would like to know. Levinson, a 28-year retired veteran of the bureau, disappeared two years ago off the coast of Iran, last seen on Kish Island, where consumers and black marketers are allowed to indulge in luxuries normally forbidden by the Iranian government on the mainland. A specialist in combating organized crime, the former FBI agent was, at the time of his disappearance, the owner of a private security company and a principal at Business Integrity International, a private investigative firm. Purportedly, he was investigating cigarette smuggling in the area, which experts insist is a serious problem in nearby Dubai. Members of Congress have adopted resolutions calling on the Obama administration to use whatever back-channels available with Tehran to determine the Levinson’s whereabouts. Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) has insisted Levinson is being held captive at a secret Iranian prison, but hasn’t offered any proof to back up his claim.
