U.S. Drops Restrictions on Family Visits to Cuba
Saturday, September 05, 2009
Following up on President Barack Obama’s declaration in April, the Treasury Department on Thursday officially removed most restrictions on family visits to Cuba. Previously, citizens and residents were limited to one family visit every three years.
The administration also eliminated limits on the amount of money that families can send to relatives in Cuba. Other changes in the works will relax rules prohibiting American telecommunications and satellite linkages between the U.S. and Cuba and licensing requirements for visitors engaged in agricultural and medical sales. The governments of the two nations are also opening discussions about establishing direct mail links.
