Army to Spend $1.2 Billion for Special Barracks for Active Duty Wounded
Wednesday, January 13, 2010

With thousands of wounded troops in need of special housing after leaving the hospital, the U.S. Army has decided to spend $1.2 billion to build specialized barracks and transition centers for soldiers facing an average of seven months of recovery and rehabilitation. The Army plans to eventually build 23 of the special housing units at bases around the country (and one in Germany) which will accommodate 3,788 beds. But the number of soldiers who qualify as “warriors in transition” is estimated at nearly 9,000.
Located adjacent to military hospitals, the Warriors in Transition Complexes will largely provide barracks-like living quarters, with some private and shared baths and living areas. Some complexes will also allow family members to live on-site to help care for relatives. Amenities will include food courts, lounge space, day care sites, and office space dedicated to education, legal aid, and other military benefits services.
