Wal-Mart may be able to beat competitors’ prices, but it can’t match others’ generosity. The world’s largest retail chain has pledged to donate $500,000 to the victims of the Haiti earthquake, as well as aid kits valued at $100,000. This combined six hundred grand falls short of what some in Hollywood are giving, or even what one Wall Street titan is promising.
Celebrity stars Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt have pledged $1 million to Haiti, specifically to Doctors Without Borders so it can staff and equip a 100-bed tent hospital with two operating rooms.
Bank of America also is pledging $1 million, along with UPS, Lowe’s and Abbot Laboratories in the form of either direct or in-kind support.
