Federal Employees Owe $3.4 Billion in Back Taxes
Tuesday, January 31, 2012
From the White House to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), nearly 280,000 federal employees owe the government back taxes, which collectively total $3.42 billion.
Among those behind on paying the IRS are 36 aides to President Barack Obama, who owe about $834,000.
As for the IRS, 1,181 of its workers had delinquent taxes adding up to $9,303,278.
Because of its size, the agency with the most employees owing taxes is the U.S. Postal Service, with 25,640 owing nearly $270 million.
The Treasury Department was the department with the lowest delinquency rate, 0.96%. At the other end was the Department of Housing and Urban Development at 3.89%. As in previous years, the agency with more than 100 employees that had the worst delinquency rate was the Government Printing Office at 6.81%.
Although it had only 77 employees, one agency with a high delinquency rate (6.49%) worth noting was…the U.S. Office of Government Ethics.
